Cell of the Servant II by YanareKu Cell of the Servant II by YanareKu

Same character from the black and white "Cell of the Servant"... but BEHOLD!! There is a background! Someone mentioned to me a while back that most of my images lack any sort of background, so from then on I decided I'd try not to plant characters in front of fuzzy, vague, lame looking gradients anymore.

A friend commissioned me to make this for him. He has the spiffier, non-blurred, un-watermarked version.

I think the most difficulty I had with this picture was the fact that all the elves are supposed to be nobility. I'm so used to drawing scrappy, ragged adventuring types that when it came to making unique and interesting outfits for folks that were supposed to be rich and powerful... I hit a brick wall. And of course, all the outfits in my head that I wanted to draw out were just too complicated for my meager skills, so I couldn't make them.

At least not yet. Some day. ::Shakes fist:: Some day.

Anyway, yes they're night elves. Night elves are taking over my entire gallery lately - the true sign of a sad, sad little WoW addict. Maybe I'll shake things up and actually draw something human next. :p

Oh gosh, it's been so many years now that I don't really remember the details about the green-haired guy anymore other then that he's one of the Highborne fawning over the slave/servant. ^^;

Thank you for your kind comments though. :)

This was back before the Sundering, so they likely had little to no idea humans even existed. XD

If they DID know about humans though, the Highborne would likely have thought they were an inferior race and not wanted to mingle with them at all.

interesting..

I don't really fancy WoW too much but i read up about the Sundering.

I still don't get why the slave is being escorted by the rich though?

He's not being escorted. He just happens to have many people interested in having time with him at once, much to his great dismay.

An amazing piece in my eye. I must admit, having a scene made entirely of Night Elf nobility instead of adventurers is a rather different concept, but you did execute marvelously. A variety in attires and appearances of the elves is a magnificent touch, none of them look similar, all them have their own subtle differences, even if they were wearing the same clothes it still be easy to differentiate them. Speaking of the clothing, it does have a distinct Night Elf feel to it, not really all that human, a good touch. The residence itself, complete with the foods, crystal candles makes this very memorable. Well done, keep it up.

I think it is nice the way it is, although a redo would be nice, but we all got priorities and issues don't we?

This is amazing! I'd say it's the first of it's kind! I've never seen ANY OTHER PICTURE, including Blizzard syndicated art, that explored Night Elven culture with such DEPTH! You are a GOD. I worship you.

Are those Highborne elves! Such detail! I've never seen pre-Sundering Night Elf culture given SUCH care and study in this way! Bravo! Favoritex10!

Yep! These are all pre-Sundering Highborne elves at one of their hedonistic parties. I'm glad you like it so much!

I have to admit though, I can't take all the credit for how much care was put into exploring the pre-Sundering elves. My friend who commissioned this piece really wrote some amazing stories about the Highborne back when we both played WoW and that's what really inspired me when I painted this all those years ago. (Good glory, it's been 5 years already. T_T)

(Sorry to spam your art page) I also want to point out the great expressions and exchanges taking place in the picture. Seeing the way each person is interacting, it really inspires you to think of what's happening between them. From the apparently upset Highborne in the foreground to the couple's silhouette in the window toward the back, it's a very rich scene. Instead of being an obvious display, it's more like a snapshot of a real moment. The art, the motion, the color, the scene, everything is superb.

Haha, no need to worry about spamming the page. :) I'm incredibly flattered that you like the image so much, especially with how old it is. When I look at it, I just sort of cringe and wish I could redo it, but I suppose that's a natural reaction for any person when they look at something they made a long time ago.

How did you learn about Night Elven culture? I ended up getting most of what I knew from my friend's stories and from WoWwiki.

I'm one of those weird roleplayers, so to play a character in WoW, I had to know the backstory of the race. So I got a lot of my knowledge both from WoWwiki (life saver), and the quest text in the actual World of Warcraft game. I even went back and played Warcraft 3 to get some first hand knowledge of Night Elf lore.

I played a 10,000+ year old druid with a Highborne mother and a kaldorei father. The romance between the two was a key story in the entire history of the character, as well as the relationships that proceeded afterward. I've given up WoW for other things, but I still have almost encyclopedic knowledge of the lore.

Never actually read any of the novelizations for Warcraft. I was always worried they'd be boring reads (just because the stories are often written by people paid to write about certain things, rather than having a true passion for the story, but that's my very, very unprofessional speculation). I'd bet that your friend's stories were quite good, if they inspired artwork like this.

Haha, well, we were both dorky roleplayers as well. (I actually ran an RP guild for 4 years and nearly lost my bloody mind. /hardcore nerd!)

He had a *really* intense character that was a 10,000+ Highborne and I had a brother/sister combo that were both 10,000+ kaldorei, so I completely sympathise with the almost encyclopedic knowledge bit. XD I sometimes get pretty sad that I lost interest in WoW because the RP was so much fun, but alas - RP isn't worth a 15 buck subscription once the game loses its shine.

I understand completely. Eventually I just got tired of WoW RP becoming little more than romantic entanglements and cheap Guild Chat fodder (night elves bickering with humans or something). I'm still in vague contact with the people I used to RP with, but it's not something I feel strongly about anymore.

It was when I found a fantastic new RP site (based on writing and limited game elements) that I actually left WoW for better things. I don't mind paying for a game that I DO think is fun, but I'm more interested in RP than gaming. The people there actually care about character development and story, and I've been much happier.

I do miss Croatoa Riversong, though. I was just about to start RPing her mother, Aelynn/Annalyth as soon as Night Elf mages came out. There's just not enough RP anywhere in WoW anymore (alliance side) to keep me there.

It's great to know that you had that same passion for RP and story though. It really does show in all your art.

It's really a great story. For a long time I was far into Night Elven culture. What probably impresses me the most (other than the unprecedented intermingling of kaldorei and quel'dorei) is the detail you gave to their wardrobe. Night Elf culture was extremely extravagant and high into fashion, and you nailed it perfectly.

Well done, incredible work.

Ooh, awesome pic! :D I love the bustling, busy feel of the pic. The coloring is really great, and the attention to the details of every mini-scene each cluster of characters is playing out really makes the picture. :heart: Must fav, must fav--it has drows in it and everything! Er...night elves? I dunno--the dark ones. ^^;

Being a big WoW addict myself, this image arouses many question marks inside my head...
I like the clear detail here and the in this work: the fruit bowl, the 'highlighted' character's costume details and that of the tall person behind him. The only thing that might create confusement by making some characters look very young, almost child-like compared to the others is not due to their lenght difference but rather the size difference of the characters' heads.
At first I thought the blurred areas don't work too well - but every time I eye the image as a whole it seems like a good decision - it leads the gaze towards the sharper area.
Is it just me or is there a mirror behind the 'main character cast', to the left?

You bring up a really good point about the size of the characters' heads. I didn't really think about that aspect while I was making the picture. It's definitely something I'm going to have to pay attention to in the future.

As for the 'mirror' to the left. That's actually the main character's twin brother. :)
